1# Beatrix Potter is going green.
Beatrix Potter is known the world over for her children’s books - but
the author was also a pioneering environmentalist.
Now the publishers of her Peter Rabbit books are launching a green edition -
with some of the proceeds going towards planting of new trees.
When Beatrix Potter published her stories herself more than a hundred years
ago, she had no idea that people would still be enjoying the tales over a
century later.
Now people of all ages can read her books while helping the environment.
2# Going green in New Orleans.
New Orleans in the United States is a city known for its unique culture
- Cajun cooking, jazz music and European architecture.
And now, three years after Hurricane Katrina, the city’s fight to recover
has seen a boom in green builds.

1# Tuna stocks threatened by high sushi demand.
The traditional annual tuna catch in Sardinia attracts buyers from
around the globe.
In Japan, demand is so high that there are concerns about the sustainability
of an already dwindling fish supply.
Conservationists maintain that traditional methods of catching fish, such as
the Sardinian ‘mattanza,’ are sustainable, but there are concerns that
the mass production methods of modern, industrial scale fishing will deplete
fish stocks.
2# Italian style sliced fish is the new sushi in LA.
Japanese Sushi has a new rival in Hollywood.
Crudo, a raw, Italian-style sliced fish, is fast becoming the new ‘it’
food.
It’s been a favourite in Italy for centuries, but now the raw seafood
salad is making waves on the US west coast as the health conscious search
for a new feast.

1# Kerala’s waterways and houseboats promoted to tourists and businesses.
Kerala’s famed backwaters, a criss-crossing chain of lakes, lagoons
and canals, have long enticed the tourists visiting this coastal state in
South India.
The authorities are now promoting luxury houseboat cruises along the
navigable backwaters to make the leisurely sojourn through Kerala’s
tranquil landscape even more memorable.
2# Traditional bark hats are naturally waterproof.
The sacred Kii mountains experience some of the highest levels of
rainfall in Japan.
No wonder pilgrims traditionally wear conical hats woven from the bark of
Cyprus trees called Ninachigasa to protect them from the elements.
The natural proprieties of the hat make it the perfect headwear whether it
rains or shines.

1# Botanical garden inspires children.
A garden on the Croatian coast has been turned into a horticultural Eden
by generations of children who have attended a local primary school.
What was once a neglected wasteland has been transformed into one of the
richest Mediterranean gardens in the region.
Thousands of lush tropical plants thrive in the warm climate and the care of
hundreds of children who have tended them over the years.
2# Donkey owners share the load of their beasts of burden.
Donkeys spend most of their lifetime transporting loads from one place
to another.
Pulling or carrying heavy loads is a sad reality for these animals -
especially in developing countries.
But now in Kenya, donkey owners have put aside a day to trade places with
their donkeys and feel the burden of their labour.

1# Black caviar stocks at an all time low.
The Volga River-delta town of Astrakhan is traditionally considered the
black caviar capital of Russia, if not of the planet.
Three quarters of the world’s caviar comes from sturgeon caught in the
Volga and the Caspian Sea, into which the river drains.
Or at least this was the situation five years ago.
Today, if you ask for black caviar at the local fish market, you’ll be
hard pressed to find any.
2# English wine industry is thriving.
Traditional European winemakers are in a rut, facing overcapacity, and
tough markets.
The European Union is considering overhauling the wine industry, which is
struggling with competition from New World rivals.
It’s proposing that excess vines are dug up, and subsidies are cut.
But vineyards in Britain are increasing production year after year.
Global warming is said to be helping grapes to grow in milder cross-Channel
climates, and the United Kingdom’s wine industry is thriving.

1# Rebuilding homes following a disaster.
As the relief effort slowly gets underway in Myanmar, one aid
organisation is hoping to help those affected by cyclone Nargis.
In 2006, CHF International (Cooperative Housing Foundation) assisted the
victims of the Indonesian earthquake.
2# A night-time tourist attraction at an historic site.
"Zama" means sunrise, the name given to the ancient ruins at
Tulum by Mayan builders hundreds of years ago.
Now, six centuries later, it is during the night time that the pre-hispanic
city shines.
The newest attraction is a nighttime light and sound spectacular, designed
to help protect the fragile archaeological site by expanding the daily
visiting schedule and spreading out the heavy volume of tourist traffic.
